Shortly after the passing of Margaret Tyzack and Anna Massey, another distinguished veteran British actress has died: Googie Withers, 94.
Googie [1917-2011], with that odd name, had a long and varied career on film, television in the theatre where she and her actor-manager husband John McCallum excelled. He was Australian and they spent a lot of time there, they played in several Oscar Wilde plays and other dramas.
Googie was in Hitchcock's THE LADY VANISHES, was the ingenue with Beatrice Lillie in ON APPROVAL ('43) and starred in several '40s Ealing dramas like PINK STRING AND SEALING WAX and IT ALWAYS RAINS 0N SUNDAY as well as DEAD OF NIGHT, MIRANDA, NIGHT AND THE CITY, DERBY DAY. She is a surgeon in the hospital drama WHITE CORRIDORS in '51. She later went into television as the prison governor in the popular long-running series WITHIN THESE WALLS. Her last film role was in SHINE in '96. Googie was a trouper - and a very popular lady, and its a very illustrious career.
